1. I saw an advance screening in Austin a couple months ago. I had no idea it was shot digitally. It looks amazing. It never even crossed my mind that it was digital and not film, and I would say I'm much more in tune with such things than the average audience member who is NOT thinking about what it's shot on at all--he just cares if the movie rocks, and in this case it does. Apocalypto was fast and furiuos and good drama.

2. I saw it yesterday, opening day, and had no idea in advance that it was shot digitally. As I was watching it, there were certain scenes that gave away the fact it was digital. Mostly they were scenes in the forest with generally lower light levels and a lot of camera movement.....it was as if a "crossover" point was reached in which the digital nature became apparent. I would say 90% of the time it was not apparent -- but 10% of the time it was. Another point....the difference between the scenes that looked digital versus thos that did not led me to believe that maybe the film was shot on a mix of digital and 35mm..it seemed like maybe they used digital in the interior jungle scenes but not elsewhere......anyway my point is that I don't think a serious student of cinematography would see this and not at least wonder, was that digital? it shows. That doesn't mean it doesn't work. But it shows.
